Background of the Study

Infection control is a fundamental aspect of healthcare that aims to prevent the spread of infectious diseases within healthcare settings. Effective infection control policies and practices are essential for safeguarding both patients and healthcare workers. In Kaduna State, the increasing burden of infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, hepatitis, and healthcare-associated infections, highlights the need for robust infection control policies in healthcare facilities. Nurses are at the forefront of infection control practices, including hand hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), environmental cleaning, and the isolation of infected patients (Ahmed & Idris, 2024).

Despite the implementation of infection control policies, studies suggest that compliance with these policies in Kaduna State is often inconsistent, leading to the persistence of infection transmission within healthcare settings. This study aims to appraise the effectiveness of infection control policies in healthcare facilities in Kaduna State, identify factors influencing compliance, and suggest measures to enhance the effectiveness of these policies.

Statement of the Problem

In Kaduna State, healthcare facilities continue to experience challenges in controlling the spread of infections, despite the presence of infection control policies. Poor compliance with infection control measures, inadequate training for healthcare workers, and insufficient resources may contribute to the ineffective implementation of these policies (Jibril et al., 2024). Nurses play a crucial role in infection control, yet their ability to consistently apply these policies may be hindered by the barriers mentioned above.

This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of infection control policies in Kaduna State and propose strategies to improve the implementation of these policies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To appraise the effectiveness of infection control policies in healthcare facilities in Kaduna State.

2. To identify the factors influencing nurses’ compliance with infection control policies.

3. To recommend strategies for improving the effectiveness of infection control policies in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

1. How effective are infection control policies in healthcare facilities in Kaduna State?

2. What factors influence nurses’ compliance with infection control policies?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve compliance with infection control policies?

Research Hypotheses

1. Infection control policies in Kaduna State are ineffective in preventing the spread of infections.

2. Factors such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and poor supervision hinder nurses’ compliance with infection control policies.

3. Training programs, improved supervision, and better resource allocation will enhance compliance with infection control policies.

Definitions of Terms

• Infection Control Policies: The set of guidelines and practices designed to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases within healthcare settings.

• Compliance with Infection Control: The extent to which healthcare workers, particularly nurses, adhere to infection prevention protocols, including hand hygiene, PPE use, and patient isolation.
